Rev. David B. Smith is a Minister of Word & Sacrament in the Presbyterian Church (USA), a Doctoral Candidate in Church History at the Faculty of Protestant Theology and Research Associate at the Center for Dependency & Slavery Studies (BCDSS) of the University of Bonn, Germany. David holds a Bachelor of Arts in Religion & Philosophy from Montreat College, a Master of Divinity from Princeton Theological Seminary, and a Master of Arts in Ecumenical Studies from the University of Bonn (pending official conferral in Summer 2021). He also studied social work at Rutgers University through the MDiv/MSW partnership. Prior to moving to Germany, he was the Interim Associate Pastor for Youth and their Families at Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church in Bryn Mawr, PA. After taking a brief leave from his doctoral studies and returning to the U.S., David recently served as a Resident Chaplain at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. David’s academic and pastoral work lives at the intersections of church history, queer identities, inter/intra religious discourse, practical theology, social ethics & global affairs. When he is not working, he can be found spending time with his spouse, Chan, playing piano, hiking, trying to ‘get less terrible at golf’ or puddle-jumping in a Cessna.

DR. VICENTE VILLAN
University of the Philippines-Diliman

He is currently a professor at the University of the Philippines Department of History. He was also a Convenor in the Tri-College Philippine Studies Program of UP Diliman from 2012 to 2020. He was the President of Adhika ng Pilipinas, Inc. from 2016 to 2019, and a co-producer and host of the radio program Tabi-tabi Folkloradyo aired on DZUP 1602 KHZ from 2014 to 2020. He finished his B.A. History, M.A. History, and PhD. History at UP Diliman. He also taught at UP Los Baños in Laguna from 1994 to 1997. He has written different articles for scholarly books such as Batayang Aklat sa Araling Panlipunan (2016), Kasaysayan ng Daigdig (2017), Mga Kontemporaryong Isyu (2017), KAGAWARAN: Mga Institusyon at Paglilingkod-bayan sa Kasaysayan at Kalinangangang Pilipino (2017), PANGHIMANWA: Mga Propesyunal at Kanilang Pamana sa Kasaysayan at Kalinangang Pilipino (2018), INDEPENDENCIA: Ang Rehimentong Tayabas sa Daloy ng Kasaysayan ng mga Kilusang Mapagpalaya (2019); and for academic journals such as DALUYAN: Journal ng Wikang Filipino (2010, 2013), DIWA E-Journal (2013), at E-Saliksik Journal (2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016), Talas: Interdisiplinaryong Journal sa Edukasyong Pangkultura (2017). He became a historical consultant for television programs such as Amaya (2011 to 2012) and Indio (2013) which was aired on GMA 7. He also received different grants and recognitions like CSSP Junior Faculty Writing Fellowship (2010), OVCRD Source of Solutions Grant (2012), Centennial Faculty Grant (2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016), and Centennial Professorial Grant (2017) ng UP Diliman; Social Sciences and Development Professorial Grant of PUP Sta. Mesa (2017); and Gawad ng Pagkilala (2013) of UP Diliman Lipunang Pangkasaysayan.

He is a Full Professor at the Filipino/Philippine Studies Department of De La Salle University-Manila (DLSU-Manila), and an Affiliate at the Southeast Asia Research Center and Hub (SEARCH) in the same university. President of Pambansang Samahan sa Linggwistika at Literaturang Filipino/National Organization of Filipino Linguistics and Literature (PSLLF). Former Vice Head of the National Committee on Language and Translation under the Philippine National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA). Public information officer of ACT-Private Schools. One of the congressional nominees of ACT Teachers Partylist for the 2016 and 2019 elections. In various times, served as legislative consultant for two elected partylist organizations. Makata ng Taon/Poet of the Year 2010 (awarded by Commission on the Filipino Language/Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino/KWF). Mananaysay ng Taon/Essayist of the Year 2009 (awarded by KWF). Holds a PhD in Southeast Asian Studies and a current student of PhD in Development Studies (Research Track). One of the lead conveners of Alyansa ng Mga Tagapagtanggol ng Wikang Filipino/Alliance of the Defenders of the Filipino Language (Tanggol Wika). Associate member of Division I (Governmental, Educational and International Policies) of the National Research Council of the Philippines (NRCP). 

ROMAN CATHOLICISM IN SOUTHEAST ASIA: THE PHILIPPINES AND TIMOR LESTE IN MULTIDISCIPLINARY PERSPECTIVE

DR. JULIUS BAUTISTA
Kyoto University

He is an Associate Professor at the Center for Southeast Asian Studies (CSEAS), Kyoto University, Japan, where he teaches courses on the topics of World Religion and Asian culture and society. Prior to his appointment at CSEAS, he was a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Southeast Asian Studies at the National University of Singapore, where he worked for just under a decade. He received his PhD in Southeast Asian Studies (Anthropology and Cultural History) at the Australian National University, and has subsequently published on religious practice in Asia, with a focus on Christian iconography, religious piety, and the relationship between religion and the state. His publications include The Way of the Cross: Suffering Selfhoods in the Roman Catholic Philippines (University of Hawaii Press, 2019), Figuring Catholicism: An Ethnohistory of the Santo Niño de Cebu (Ateneo, 2010), Christianity in Southeast Asia: Colonialism, Nationalism and the Caveats to Conversion (book chapter, Oxford, 2014) and Catholic Democratization: Religious Networks and Political Agency in the Philippines and Timor Leste (journal article, Sojourn, 2020)
